Beware of online scams offering vehicle registration or license plate refunds

November 28, 2025

The Government of Prince Edward Island wants to remind residents that PEI does not issue text messages offering refunds for vehicle registration or license plates.

Recently, provinces such as Ontario and Alberta have reported scams where fraudulent text messages claim to provide registration or plate refunds. While the province is not aware of this happening in PEI, it wants Islanders to stay alert and protect themselves and others:

  • PEI will never contact you by text message about registration or plate refunds.
  • Scammers send fake texts to trick people into clicking links or sharing personal information.
  • If you receive a suspicious message, delete it. Do not click links or provide personal details.
  • Talk to friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to online scams, so they know what to watch for.
  • Encourage anyone who receives a suspicious text to report it to police.
  • Visit the Be Safe Online resource to learn more about protecting yourself and others online.

If you have questions about text messages related to vehicle registration or licensing, phone 1-833-734-1873 or email contactpei@gov.pe.ca
