Fishers commended for conservation efforts

Lobster fishers have been commended for recovering missing gear and freeing hundreds of lobsters following the end of the season in Lobster Fishing Area 24.

Fisheries and Communities Minister Jamie Fox applauded the efforts of the Western Gulf Fishermen’s Association and fishers from Lennox Island for recovering 59 traps and a gill net in cooperation with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Coast Guard. Recovering the missing gear prevents “ghost fishing” and helps ensure the conservation of fish species including Right Whales and other marine mammals.

“The leadership taken by lobster fishers will have positive environmental and habitat impacts and helps ensure the sustainability of the industry,” said Minister Fox. “I encourage all sectors of the fishery to help protect and enhance our marine environment and the species that are part of it.”

The Prince Edward Island lobster fishery has been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council for its environmentally sustainable practices.
