Island residents invited to give feedback on upcoming legislative changes
The province is inviting residents to share their opinion on changes to the Child Support Regulations, under the Children’s Law Act.
The Child Support Regulations govern the administrative recalculation program, which is a free government program that annually recalculates eligible child support orders and agreements to ensure that children on PEI continue to receive the amount of support that they are entitled to.
“We are always working to make sure that provincial laws are up to date and modernized for the benefit of our residents. The changes that are being put forward are in line with national trends towards expanding the scope around recalculation, and we look forward to hearing from the public on the changes that are being presented.”
— Minister of Justice and Public Safety, and Attorney General Bloyce Thompson
The proposed amendments aim to make the regulations more accessible, and expand the scope of circumstances in which families can use the recalculation program, which could:
- enable more families, in more circumstances, to be able to use PEI’s free recalculation program instead of going to court; and
- reduce the number of variation applications made to the court.
