Strengthening mental health services

A new mental health walk-in clinic in Montague will improve access to mental health services for Islanders in Kings County.

Located at the Community Mental Health Office (126 Douses Road), the clinic will be open Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting December 6 to help Islanders dealing with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.  No appointment or referral is needed.

“We appreciate that mental illness can take a toll on an individual and their family, and we are working hard to put the right supports, in the right place, so that Islanders can access the care they need when they need it,” said Minister of Health and Wellness Robert Mitchell. “Mental health walk-in clinics are an example of how we are working with health care providers to remove barriers to care, offering Islanders access to trained mental health professionals who can help in their moment of need.”

Individuals visiting the walk-in clinic can see a registered community mental health therapist for up to one hour. Sessions focus on the individual’s needs, wants, and strengths. At the end of the session, the individual will receive a brief written summary of what was discussed and suggestions or recommendations, including referrals to services offered by Community Mental Health.

“The mental health landscape is changing and more Islanders are finding the courage to reach out for help than ever before. In many cases, the individuals that we are seeing at our clinics are reaching out for help for the first time ever,” said Bruce Davison, mental health social worker and manager of community mental health – east.

“Our staff are always seeking ways in which we can work better,  identifying opportunities to improve access to services in community, such as expanding the mental health walk-in clinics, so that we can see more Islanders who need our help and support,” added Davison.

Last year, more than 600 Islanders accessed mental health support at weekly mental health walk-in clinics located in five communities.
