PEI agriculture is her passion

To say Liz Maynard is a community leader is an understatement. As an active member of three boards; including president of the Prince County Hospital Foundation, and many other ongoing volunteer roles, she demonstrates a dedication to helping others and a passion for rural life.

“I’m a firm believer in being at the table where the decisions are made and participating in the community,” said Maynard of Port Hill, who stepped up to serve on board of the Agricultural Insurance Corporation after retiring from Farm Credit Canada in 2013. “Because I had knowledge of agriculture risk management and was familiar with the organization, I wanted to contribute.”

Maynard grew up on a mixed farm in Crapaud, attended the Nova Scotia Agriculture College and the University of Guelph to earn a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, married a dairy farmer from Port Hill, and enjoyed a 35-year career in agriculture.

“I grew up in it, lived in it, and worked in it, “Maynard said. “Agriculture is very much a passion for me.”

During her time with Farm Credit Canada, Maynard participated in many women in agriculture forums and saw an impressive caliber of women leaders in roles ranging from hands-on farmers to government directors. She speaks with pride and enthusiasm about the women who are making a difference in the agriculture industry.

“Women bring a different perspective and communications style to the boardroom table,” she said. “Today’s women in agriculture have good ideas, a capacity to network and to build connections.  There are lots of great mentors out there for young women today.”

Too humble to say so, Maynard herself is recognized as a talented and capable role model. She was named PEI Outstanding Agrologist of the Year Award in 2016 and this past summer, she and her husband Ron were honoured as Tyne Valley Citizens of the Year.

“There are so many things happening in our communities and retirement gives me the chance to contribute,” she added.  “My hope is to see women continue to take on leadership roles in agriculture – particularly on commodity boards. I encourage others to step up and take part.”

The Agricultural Insurance Corporation is a crown corporation that provides crop insurance and income support programs to farmers.  Its board of directors is made up of community members who apply through Engage PEI and are appointed by cabinet.
