Statement by Premier Dennis King on International Day for Persons with Disabilities

Hon. Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island, issued the following statement on International Day for Persons with Disabilities:

“Today is an important day for Islanders living with or supporting someone with a disability.

It’s a day for us to recognize that disability inclusion is essential in upholding human rights, improving the health and wellbeing of all Islanders and building strong, resilient communities.

This year, the Province enacted the Support for Persons with Disabilities Act. This Act mandates that government will provide supports and assured income to persons with disabilities. This is a first for Prince Edward Island and persons with disabilities and those who support them have been advocating for this.

Persons with disabilities are less likely to access health care, education, employment and to participate in the community. An integrated approach is required to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind.

By working with community partners, such as Resource Abilities, federal and municipal governments, the province will continue to prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities, today and every day. Together, we can remove and prevent barriers to accessibility, making a difference for people with disabilities and those that support them.”
