Two Island teachers receive national award
Two Prince Edward Island teachers are among a select group of teachers across Canada receiving the 2018 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Stacy Thain of Summerside Intermediate School and Natalie MacNeill of Grace Christian School are among 64 Canadian teachers being honored for remarkable achievements in education and commitment to prepare their students for a digital and innovation-based economy.
“We extend warm congratulations to Stacy and Natalie, who are very deserving of this prestigious award and national recognition,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Jordan Brown. “For Prince Edward Island to have two of just 64 recipients from across the country is an extraordinary accomplishment for our small province. It proves that Islanders are fortunate to have many passionate and committed teachers, who go above and beyond to engage their students in learning and prepare them for success in a changing world.”
About Stacy Thain: Stacy Thain has been recognized for supporting academic excellence while making learning relevant for her students. She is currently on a one-year assignment with the Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture.
Working in both official languages, she creates opportunities for intermediate students to connect what they are learning in school with the world around them, and teaches leadership skills to empower students to stand up and make a difference. She creates authentic, relevant learning experiences for adolescents using technology, music and community engagement.
About Natalie MacNeill: Natalie MacNeill has been recognized for developing and delivering an entire elementary science and technology curriculum that engages students in the process of inquiry and problem-solving, develops both knowledge and skill over a full spectrum of science, and invites students to become active participants in creating the technology that is changing our world.
Mrs. MacNeill was also recognized for her collaborative project-based learning opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and for instilling the importance of global service and community involvement.
