What does it mean when a place name is deemed derogatory?
The name of a community is personal; it can shape our identity and provide us with a sense of pride. Community names also evolve with time, alongside our language, societal values, and understanding. While the original intent of a name may not have been to cause harm, words gain different meanings and understandings over time and can become harmful to others; discriminatory or derogatory place names are no exception.
What is the PEI Provincial Geographic Naming and Renaming Program?
The Government of PEI created the Geographic Naming and Renaming Program in response to the Geographical Names Board of Canada call for provincial naming bodies to change derogatory names.
The PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program provides a process for the public, including government, to name or rename a location in the province, or to modify the geographical area covered under an existing place name. Complex renaming applications are led by a Geographical Naming Advisory Committee, comprised of up to 5 core members and up to 3 floating members from the community being renamed.
The Advisory Committee’s role is to help guide the planning for the community engagement process and to encourage participation. Meaningful community involvement is the cornerstone of this process. The Committee’s recommendation will consider community feedback and be referred to the Province for approval.

- Meaningful Indigenous Involvement
- Accessibility and Clarity
- Informative and Transparent
- Inclusive and Respectful
- Mindful of Creating a Sense of Belonging
- Consistency and Alignment
