Community-Specific Renaming Engagement Process
NOTICE OF CHANGE TO COMMUNITY MEETING # 3
The committee has carefully reviewed feedback received from the community after Community Meeting #2 on November 17 and is making adjustments to ensure the process reflects your input and priorities.
We heard concerns about the impact of some potential road names on emergency services, sound quality, and the need for more discussion before finalizing choices. As a result:
- At the December 1 meeting, instead of voting on the final name, the community will review the full list of naming suggestions for the community, bay, and road and work together to narrow each list down to the top five options.
- The December 1 meeting will be held at a new venue where sound quality will be improved. Please note the venue change:
Mount Stewart Community Center
87 South Main Street
Mount Stewart, PE
December 1, 2025
7:00-9:00 p.m.
- The final vote will be deferred approximately 2 weeks to allow time for these improvements and additional input. Date and location to be announced shortly when confirmed.
Your voice matters, and these changes are intended to make the process more transparent and collaborative. Courtesy and kindness to our neighbours and committee members are critical parts of making this community process as smooth as possible. Thank you for your engagement and commitment to shaping the future of Savage Harbour.
If you have any questions, please contact the committee by email at naming@gov.pe.ca or by contacting Ryan Pineau at 902-368-4060.
Sincerely,
Geographical Naming Advisory Committee

What area will be renamed?
The community of Savage Harbour includes all areas outlined with the blue border. The bay is shaded in blue. This map is used provincially for taxation and civic address maps as well as nationally in the Canadian Geographical Names Database.

How can I submit a naming suggestion?
Submissions for naming suggestions are now closed. Proposed names will be reviewed at Community Meeting #3.
What does it mean when a place name is deemed derogatory?
The name of a community is personal; it can shape our identity and provide us with a sense of pride. Community names also evolve with time, alongside our language, societal values, and understanding. While the original intent of a name may not have been to cause harm, words gain different meanings and understandings over time and can become harmful to others; discriminatory or derogatory place names are no exception.
What is the PEI Provincial Geographic Naming and Renaming Program?
The Government of PEI created the Geographic Naming and Renaming Program in response to the Geographical Names Board of Canada call for provincial naming bodies to change derogatory names.
The PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program provides a process for the public, including government, to name or rename a location in the province, or to modify the geographical area covered under an existing place name. Complex renaming applications are led by a Geographical Naming Advisory Committee, comprised of up to 5 core members and up to 3 floating members from the community being renamed.
The Advisory Committee’s role is to help guide the planning for the community engagement process and to encourage participation. Meaningful community involvement is the cornerstone of this process. The Committee’s recommendation will consider community feedback and be referred to the Province for approval.
For more details, please see PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program and Advisory Committee.
What are the Guiding Principles of the PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program?
The PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program will follow these six principles.
- Meaningful Indigenous Involvement
- Accessibility and Clarity
- Informative and Transparent
- Inclusive and Respectful
- Mindful of Creating a Sense of Belonging
- Consistency and Alignment
