Agent Licensing

Any real estate agent operating in PEI must be licensed through the Registrar of Real Estate in accordance with the Real Estate Trading Act

Licensing Period

Real estate agent licenses are valid for two years from the date it is issued.

Agent Eligibility/Requirements


(1) Sole Proprietorship - an unincorporated business that is owned by one individual.

To be eligible for real estate agent license as a sole proprietor you must:

  • Be a least 18 years of age
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Be licensed as a real estate salesperson for at least two of the four years immediately preceding applying for an agent's license
  • Successfully complete the Agent education/examination requirements: 
    • PEI Real Estate Association agent/broker licensing course and associated examination within the previous two years, or hold an equivalent license in another jurisdiction
    • Non-Residents: All non-resident applicants will also be required to take the Provincial Examination offered by the PEIREA and pass the associated exam.
  • Provide a recent Criminal Record Check, conducted at a detachment of the RCMP or a municipal/provincial police force
  • Maintain a permanent office in Prince Edward Island;
  • Maintain a trust account, books and records pertaining to PEI transaction within Prince Edward Island;
  • Provide and maintain a surety bond of $5,000;
  • Submit the non-refundable fee of $300; and
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the Real Estate Trading Act.

(2) Corporationa legal entity that exists separate and apart from its owners (shareholders)

 To be eligible for real estate agent license as a corporation you must:

  • Designate a Designated Representative. A Designated Representative must meet the following criteria:
    • Be actively engaged in the corporation;
    • Be a licensed real estate salesperson (and continue to maintain salesperson's license);
    • Eligible to obtain an agent's license as a sole proprietorship (see above).
  • Maintain a permanent office in Prince Edward Island;
  • Maintain a trust account, books and records pertaining to PEI transaction within Prince Edward Island;
  • List the name and address of officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer  (see application)
  • Provide and maintain a surety bond of $5,000 in the name of the Corporation;
    • Note: Designated Representative must also maintain its own surety bond in the amount of $2,000, as required to maintain a salespersons license 
  • Submit the non-refundable fee of $300; and
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the Real Estate Trading Act.

(3) Partnership - an association or relationship between two or more individuals that join together to carry on a trade or business and are not incorporated.

 To be eligible for real estate agent license as a partnership you must:

  • Designate a Designated Representative. A Designated Representative must meet the following criteria:
    • Be actively engaged in the partnership;
    • Be a licensed real estate salesperson (and continue to maintain salesperson's license);
    • Eligible to obtain an agent's license as a sole proprietorship (see above).
  • Maintain a permanent office in Prince Edward Island;
  • Maintain a trust account, books and records pertaining to PEI transaction within Prince Edward Island;
  • List the name and address of partners (see application)
  • Provide and maintain a surety bond of $5,000 in the name of the Partnership;
    • Note: Designated Representative must also maintain its own surety bond in the amount of $2,000, as required to maintain a salespersons license 
  • Submit the non-refundable fee of $300; and
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the Real Estate Trading Act.
