What every dog owner needs to know

Who is responsible for a dog?

Examples could include:

  • Anyone with possession or control of the dog
  • Anyone who occupies the premises where the dog is
  • A parent/ guardian if the owner is a minor

Licensing your dog

Outside a municipality

  • Dogs 6+ months old must be licensed
  • Licenses are avalibale at Access PEI or the PEI Humane Society
    • $0 lifetime license (for spayed / neutered and microchipped dogs) OR
    • $10/ year (for dogs who are spayed / neutered but NOT microchipped)
    • $20/ year (for dogs who are not spayed / neutered)
    • All dogs must be licensed to their new owner

In a municipality

  • Check your local bylaws for licensing rules and fees

Leashing your dog

Outside a municipality

  • Dogs must be leashed (max. 3 meters) or securely confined in public
    • Exceptions: services dogs, law enforcement/security dogs, hunting or herding, shows/sports, training or designated off-leash areas.

In a municipality

  • Follow your local dog bylaws
