The Province of PEI is offering a new program to purchase agricultural land that has been designated as an index field under the new National Potato Wart Response Plan

Who is eligible?

Those who own land that has been placed under notice as an index field by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

How do I apply?

Complete and submit the application form, which requests the following information:

  • The name and contact information of the owner of the land
  • The location/address of the land
  • The property ID (PID) of each index field
  • The number of acres of index fields that you would like to sell to the government
  • Year the field was designated as an index field

Questions and Answers

Why is this program being offered?

There are restrictions on what index fields can be used for, which means these fields are not able to be used for many agricultural purposes in the short term. This has financial implications for agricultural producers.

Can I sell my land to the government?

If you own land that has been placed under notice as an index field by the CFIA, you may be eligible to sell the land to the PEI government.

What is the process?

If you are the owner of an index field, please complete the application form and submit by:

  • Email: AGR-feedback@gov.pe.ca

    or
  • Mail: PEI Index Field Buy-Back Program, PEI Department of Agriculture, 11 Kent Street, PO Box 2000, Charlottetown PE C1A 7N8

A representative from the Department of Agriculture will reach out to you for more details and to make arrangements for an independent appraisal of your land.

How long will it take?

Each transaction is unique, however, timelines of up to a number of months to complete the transaction can be expected.

How much will I get for my land?

This will depend on an independent appraisal of the land that will determine the value of the land based on what can currently be done with it.
