Where do I find out about upcoming municipal by-elections and results?

When are municipal by-elections held?

By-elections are held when an existing council member position (councillor or mayor) becomes vacant.  A vacancy can occur when a member resigns, moves out of the municipality, or is disqualified.

A by-election be held within six months of the vacancy unless the vacancy occurs in the last 12 months of the general term (terms end on December 6th of a general election year).

What happens once a vacancy occurs?

Notice of a vacancy must be provided to Municipal Affairs within 10 days of the vacancy. Report a Council Vacancy

A by-election date must be set by council resolution and must be a Monday.  Municipal by-elections must be conducted in compliance with the MGA, regulations and bylaws. Use the Municipal By-Election Calendar to identify an election date and key process dates. 

Can a councillor run for a vacant mayoral position?

A council member must resign their current council position if they want to run for a vacant mayoral position. The by-elections for both positions can be held at the same time.  The notice of nomination should include information about both vacant positions. A council member who is nominated for mayor must resign from council within 24 hours after accepting the nomination.

How long is the term?

When a person is elected or appointed to fill a vacancy, they hold the office until the end of the term (December 6th of a general election
