Residents of Savage Harbour are being asked to help choose a new name for their area and its bay as part of a provincial initiative to remove derogatory place names.
The Government of Prince Edward Island launched the Geographic Naming and Renaming Program in response to a national call by the Geographical Names Board of Canada to review and revise place names deemed offensive or harmful. The Geographical Naming Advisory Committee, made up of PEI residents and community representatives, will lead the process.
Three in-person engagement sessions will be held for community residents in October, November and December. Information packages with session dates and locations will be sent to community members in the coming days. Registration is required. During the sessions, residents will learn more about the renaming process, suggest potential new names and vote on a final name for their community and bay.
A public announcement will be made once the new name has been chosen. Community residents will be notified of the change directly.
Additionally, from October 16 -29, any Island resident can submit name suggestions and feedback electronically at Geographic Naming and Renaming Program, or by email at naming@gov.pe.ca, or by mail to:
