KCMH’s emergency department wait times now online

Islanders can make better-informed decisions about where to access emergency care now that wait times for Kings County Memorial Hospital’s emergency department are online.

Kings County Memorial Hospital is the final Prince Edward Island emergency department to make its wait times available online. Wait times and information for all four emergency departments are available at www.healthpei.ca/waittimes.

“We are excited to now be able to share our emergency department wait times, both online and within our waiting room, with residents of Kings County and all Islanders,” said Kings County Memorial Hospital administrator Edna Miller. “The busyness of our emergency department can change from one moment to the next depending on the number of patients under our care and how sick they may be, both of which impact wait times for other patients. Being able to share real-time information will help those coming to our emergency department understand what to expect.”

Queen Elizabeth and Prince County hospitals were the first to publish their wait times on Health PEI’s Emergency Department Wait Times webpage in 2013. Western Hospital made theirs available in 2016.

Estimated emergency department wait times are updated every five minutes. The wait time is based upon the average time experienced by similar patient types over the previous few hours.

The estimate reflects approximately how long a person may wait to see a physician after they are assessed and registered. Emergency department triage nurses assess a person’s health condition based on their presenting symptoms and categorize them as one of three patient types: most urgent, urgent, or less than urgent.

“Making emergency department wait times available helps Islanders and their families to be better prepared when coming to hospital,” said Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson. “This initiative is also a great example of how our health care system continues to use technology to provide Islanders with valuable health information and better access to care, when and where they need it the most.”

There were approximately 17,000 visits to Kings County Memorial Hospital’s emergency department in 2017. Of those, 63 per cent were for non-urgent health care.

The hospital’s emergency department operates from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. For more information about Kings County Memorial Hospital, visit www.healthpei.ca/kcmh.
