PEI’s cattle herd is on the rise

January 19, 2026

Over the past year, Islanders travelling on rural roads may have noticed a subtle but meaningful change in the landscape. More cows are happily grazing in PEI’s scenic pastures.

This is, in part, thanks to the Grow the Herd Pilot Program, which is designed to increase the beef cow population and number of cattle processed on the Island.

The program is part of the 2021 PEI Livestock Strategy, created to address the province’s declining beef cattle numbers. The strategy highlights the role of livestock in soil health and supporting a vibrant rural economy.

Ellen Davis is PEI’s Livestock Champion and often described as the “boots on the ground” for all things PEI beef. She works closely with producers across the province and has seen firsthand the strong enthusiasm for the grow the herd program.

“It’s been busy,” she says. “Coming from a beef farming background in New Brunswick, I’ve always been familiar with the industry, but witnessing the ambition of local farmers here on PEI has been truly inspiring. We’ve already exceeded our first-year goal.”

Davis visits approximately 20 farms each month, connecting with producers to share knowledge, offer support, and provide information about provincial government programs and initiatives.

“Farmers are optimistic about the future. There’s been an incredible response from beef producers who are just starting out or looking to build on the family herd. Young people are excited to get into the industry and it’s so positive to see.”

To date, the program has received more than 75 applications, resulting in over 800 cows being added to the Island herd.

Drew Jeffrey is a beef producer in Waterside, PEI. His farm has been in the family for over two centuries, and he’s thrilled to have taken part in the program.

“When I heard about it, I got on the phone to Ellen, and we started to get the process rolling right away.”

Jeffrey's own herd consists of 60 head of cattle and includes Simmental, Charolais and Black Angus breeds.

He says taking part in the program has been a big financial incentive to purchase and retain heifers.

“By keeping cattle on the Island, we’re not only supporting local beef industry but also building a more sustainable future for our community, environment, and agriculture partners.”
