Statement by Premier Rob Lantz on Mi’kmaw History Month
Hon. Rob Lantz, Premier of Prince Edward Island issued the following statement:
“October is Mi’kmaw History Month. It is an opportunity to learn more about the Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island and Canada.
The Government of PEI remains committed to advancing reconciliation and supporting the Mi’kmaq people. We must recognize the enduring impact of colonization, including assimilation and discrimination, on Indigenous peoples living in the province and across Canada.
Throughout October, the Indigenous Relations Secretariat will offer a series of lunch and learn sessions by Mi’kmaq presenters to public service employees. KAIROS Blanket Exercises will also be offered by Lennox Island Mi’kmaq Cultural Centre to employees, so they can learn more about the history, culture, and language of Mi’kmaq people.Last week, I was pleased to be part of the unveiling of a new specialty licence plate featuring a Mi’kmaw design, recognizing the contributions of the PEI Mi’kmaq to the Island.
I encourage all Islanders to take the time to deepen their understanding of the Mi’kmaq, their heritage, and their traditions during this month and beyond.”
