Council of the College of Allied Health Professionals of Prince Edward Island

The Council of the College of Allied Health Professionals governs the affairs of the College.

What is the function of the Council?

Section 7(2) of the Regulated Health Professions Act (the “RHPA”) describes the duties of the council of a college as follows:

  • to manage and conduct the business and affairs of the college; and
  • to exercise the college’s rights, powers and privileges in the college’s name and on the college’s behalf.

Primary role: Non-adjudicative

Material role: Strategic Development, Advisory, Professional Organization and Managerial/Oversight

How many people are on the council?

Section 7 of the RHPA provides that a council shall be comprised of at least six persons.

What are the requirements of council members?

Formal Qualifications: Dependent on position sought.

Work & Experience Requirements: Dependent on position sought.

Skills Required: Consistent with material role (see "Function" above).

What are the nomination requirements?

Subsection 7(5) of the RHPA provides that at least one third of the members of a council shall be public representatives appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The remaining two thirds of the members of a council are nominated by the membership of the College in accordance with its bylaws.

Will I get paid?

There is no remuneration paid to members of the Council.

What is the time commitment of the council?

The Council meets approximately six times a year. Generally, materials are forwarded to members in advance of the meeting. The time required for each meeting, including a preparatory review of materials, is approximately four hours. Opportunities may exist for additional committee work.

The RHPA provides that the term of a member of a council shall not exceed three years. A member may serve more than one term of office but not more than six consecutive years.
