Indigenous Relations Secretariat – What We Do
The Indigenous Relations Secretariat (IRS) strengthens government’s approach to reconciliation and Indigenous matters within the province.
The Secretariat also works to increase public awareness and promote greater inter-departmental collaboration within government on Indigenous matters.
Our Core Functions
The Indigenous Relations Secretariat supports the Government of PEI on its path to reconciliation with First Nations and Indigenous peoples. We facilitate healthy and productive relationships by:
- Advising on matters in a manner that is collaborative and solution-based.
- Promoting greater understanding and awareness through education and engagement.
- Negotiating to advance and reconcile rights-based initiatives and other related matters.
- Developing respectful partnerships that cultivate and enhance opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
Our Priorities
The Government of PEI prioritizes partnerships, programs, projects and organizations that improve social and economic wellbeing of Indigenous peoples throughout the province. These priorities include:
- Support for wealth-generating projects that enable First Nations Peoples in their efforts to move toward economic self-sufficiency.
- Cultivation of healthy, productive relationships with First Nations and Indigenous peoples that are the foundation for societal growth and transformative change.
- Support for a made-in-PEI approach to reconciliation, including advancement of the Accord negotiation process and PEI’s responses to the Calls to Action and the Calls for Justice.
- Development of specific programs and services that highlight the contribution of Indigenous peoples to PEI history and culture.
