What categories of tests are included under pathology lab results?

Pathology tests help diagnose diseases by examining tissues, organs and cells collected during biopsies or surgeries. The following categories are included under the pathology lab results available in MyHealthPEI:

Histology

Histology involves examining tissues from the body samples to find out what may be wrong. These tissues might come from a biopsy or a surgery. Common test techniques include:

  • Histopathology – Examining tissues and cells under a microscope to check for conditions such as cancer, inflammation, or degenerative diseases
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) – Looking for specific proteins in tissues to help health care providers know what kind of disease you may have and how to treat it.
  • Special stains – Used to make certain parts of the tissue stand out, like bacteria or fungi.

 Cytology

Cytology looks at individual cells to find if there are problems. Common cytology test categories include:

  • Gynecologic cytology – Includes Pap tests, checking for cervical cancer.
  • Non-gynecologic cytology – Checking fluids like urine or samples, such as tissue scrapings and fine needle aspiration, to look for abnormal cells.
  • Cell block preparation – Cells are grouped together so they can be looked at more closely.

How long does it take for lab results to be available in MyHealthPEI?

However, if your child or dependent is 16 years of age or older, they can access components of their personal health information in MyHealthPEI by creating their own MyPEI Account and entering their PEI Health Card number.

If this is not an option, you can request a copy of your child’s or dependent’s lab results from Health PEI.
