How do I get my first driver’s license?

If you are a beginner driver, you must follow the three-year Graduated Driver Licensing Program before you will be issued a Class 5 driver’s licence. First you must get your Instruction Driver’s Permit. Find more information at Getting an Instruction Driver’s Permit.

How do I renew my license?

You can renew your driver's license up to five (5) months before the expiry date on your license card. Before your license expires, you should appear at Access PEI in person to Renew Your Driver’s License.

What if I hold a driver’s license from another province or country?

If you are a resident of PEI with a valid driver’s license from another province or country you must transfer to a PEI license within four months. For more information refer to Driving with an Out-of-Province Driver’s License.

What if I want to drive another type of vehicle?

You may need a different class license to operate other types of vehicles, such as a motor cycle, a large truck or passenger van. Find more information about other licenses in Classes of Driver Licenses

What is the fee for a driver’s license?

The fee for a driver’s license is based on the class of license and testing required. For current licensing fees, refer to Drivers License Fees

All driving license and registration fees are prescribed in the Highway Traffic Act Fees Regulations.

Please note: A PEI driver’s license is a wallet-size card with your photo and other personal information which can be used as a valid photo ID. All license/photo ID cards are issued with design and security features to help prevent identity theft and fraud. When you apply for a new or renewed license, you will receive a temporary document which is valid for 60 days. Your new card will be printed in an offsite facility and may take up to 14 business days to arrive in the mail. See Changes to Driver’s License and Photo ID Card.

Why do I have to wait for my new card to arrive in the mail?

Registry of Motor Vehicles uses computerized facial recognition software to prevent suspended drivers or fraudsters from getting a driver's licence or photo ID card.  It takes a few days to complete this process and print your card.

Why can't I wear eyeglasses or smile in my photo?

Registry of Motor Vehicles uses computerized facial recognition software to help confirm your identity.  Eyeglasses and smiling can prevent the facial recognition software from working its best.

How does this new process benefit me?

Road safety is improved - suspended drivers cannot get a new licence by using another person's identity.

Is computerized facial recognition reliable?

Yes.  Facial recognition software has been used for many years by governments and businesses all over the world.  It is a powerful and proven technology.  However, it is not the only tool the Registry of Motor Vehicles uses.  Every photo flagged by the system is double-checked by a person who is trained in facial recognition.

Will you share facial recognition data with anyone else?

The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to protecting your privacy. Facial recognition data will not be shared with outside parties, except when required by court order.

Where is my new card printed?

Your card will be printed in a secure facility located in Burlington, Ontario, by a company called Gemalto.  They are a world leader in digital security

Can I drive while I wait for my new licence to arrive?

Yes.  You will receive a 60-day temporary driver's licence.  Keep it with you when you are driving until your new card arrives in the mail.
