What is a Fine Option program?

A Fine Option program allows an individual the option of paying a fine, in part or whole, through the performance of Community Service Work. Community Service Work is volunteer hours performed for non-profit community organizations or municipalities, approved by Probation Services.

How am I eligible for the program?

To be eligible for the program, your fine cannot be past due.

How is the amount of community service hours to be performed determined?

The number of community services hours under a Fine Option is determined by dividing the amount of fine owing by the provincial hourly minimum wage.

What is the cost to participate in the program?

There are no fees to participate in this program.

What happens if I enter the fine option program but I don’t complete all the Community Service Hours?

If you are unable to complete all Community Service Hours under a Fine Option, you will be given credit for the hours completed. The remainder of your fine must be paid to the court.

What happens if I don’t pay my fine?

If you do not satisfy your fine in full, one or more of the following can occur:

  • You may be refused a license or permit, or the renewal of a license or permit
  • Your license to operate a motor vehicle may be suspended
  • Judgment may be entered against you in civil court for the amount of the fine
  • You may be required to serve a period of time in jail

Who do I contact if I want to participate in Fine Option?

If you are 18 years or older when you receive the fine, Probation Services will determine if you are eligible for the program.
