Beverage Container Registration, Distribution and Deposit Return
Consumers pay a deposit or fee when they purchase any recyclable or refillable container filled with an alcoholic or non-alcoholic (non-dairy) beverage in PEI. Anyone selling beverages in containers to PEI retailers, wholesale or otherwise, must register as a beverage distributor and register their beverage containers with the provincial environment division (Environment, Energy and Climate Action) in accordance with the Beverage Containers Act.
What is the deposit rate on the container?
The amount of the container deposit payable for:
- A non-alcoholic (non-dairy) beverage in a container less than five litres is ten (10) cents .
- An alcoholic beverage in a container:
- 500 ml or less is ten (10) cents
- More than 500 ml is twenty (20) cents; and
- Per dozen containers filled with beer is $1.20.
How do I register a beverage container or distributer?
To register as a beverage distributer, submit a completed Beverage Distributor Registration Form.
To register a beverage container, submit a completed the Atlantic Provinces Beverage Container Registration Form.
How do registered distributers remit fees collected on beverage containers?
Registered distributers are required to collect a deposit on each beverage container and file a monthly return and remittance within 20 days of the month end, even if no deposit is payable for the period.
