The Department of Justice and Public Safety works to reduce risks to the community and to strengthen the criminal and civil justice systems. The department coordinates efforts for efficient public safety services to provide security to citizens from threats to their personal and economic stability.

Some of the department’s responsibilities include:

  • Community and correctional services, including probation services, victim services and youth justice services
  • Consumer services, including overseeing licensing of certain industries and specific types of consumer transactions 
  • Family justice programs and services that promote and emphasize the best interests of children
  • Coordinating and managing emergency management activities through the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO)
  • Legal services
  • Court services
  • Fire Marshal’s Office, Office of the Chief Coroner, Conservation Officers, and Firearms Office
