The PEI Liaison Program provides Island patients and their families with a registered nurse contact to help connect them to other health care professionals, programs and services related to out-of-province medical treatment. The Liaison Nurse also assists with transition of health care back to PEI.

Where can I stay while receiving out-patient treatment?

Many of the out-of-province hospitals have accommodation programs for patients receiving outpatient treatment. Please contact your treating physician’s office for specific details.

Where can my family stay while I am in hospital?

There are several accommodations located close to the hospital. Please note, families must pay for their accommodations themselves. Ask the PEI Liaison Nurse for some guidance, if needed.

Can a home care nurse visit me in PEI after I am discharged home?

The Liaison Nurse can assist in making a discharge plan for your safe return to home. Patients who require continued nursing care will be provided outpatient clinic appointments at their local hospital. PEI Home Care will see patients who require outpatient nursing care, but for mobility reasons cannot seek care outside their home.

Can a PEI ambulance take me to and from hospitals out of province?

If you are in hospital in PEI and require care out of province, your physician may arrange an ambulance transfer at no cost to you.

If you are discharged directly home from the out-of-province hospital, you are responsible for arranging transportation.

If you are discharged to a hospital on PEI, you will be transferred by ambulance to the nearest PEI hospital with an available bed. This transfer will be arranged for you at no cost. Learn more about Hospital Transfers.
