Environmental / Public Health
The goal of Environmental/Public Health is to promote and protect the health and well-being of all Islanders and visitors. Legislative authority for this program falls under the Public Health Act and the associated regulations which are enforced by Environmental Health Officers:
- Food Premises Regulations
- Milk Processing Regulations
- Personal Service Regulations
- Recreational Camp Regulations
- Rental Accommodation Regulations
- Slaughterhouse Regulations
- Swimming Pool and Waterslide Regulations
- Tanning Facility Regulations
Legislative authority also falls under the Tobacco and Electronic Smoking Devices Sales and Access Act and Regulations and the Smoke Free Places Act and Regulations which are enforced by a Tobacco Enforcement Officer.

Environmental/Public Health also provides expert consultation and inspection services in a wide variety of areas, including, but not limited to:
- Animal bite investigations
- Boil water advisories
- Communicable disease investigations
- Emergency preparedness (food and drinking water safety)
- Indoor air quality
- Infection prevention and control
- Recreational water safety
- Seasonal agricultural worker housing
Environmental Health Officers (Public Health Inspectors)
Environmental Health Officers are responsible for carrying out measures to protect public health by identifying and eliminating public health hazards. This includes the administration and enforcement of provincial legislation and providing consultation, education, and investigative services to clients and other governmental departments.
Environmental Health Officers in Prince Edward Island hold a certificate in Public Health Inspection from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.

There are six accredited institutions across Canada that offer the Environmental Public Health Program required for certification. Environmental Health offers practicums for public health inspector students to assist with their national certification.
Tobacco Enforcement Officers
Tobacco Enforcement Officers are responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with provincial tobacco and vaping legislation to protect public health. This includes conducting inspections, compliance checks, and investigations related to the sale and use of tobacco and vaping products. Tobacco Enforcement Officers also provide education and guidance to retailers, the public, and other stakeholders, and collaborate with partner agencies to support harm reduction and regulatory compliance.
Tobacco Enforcement Officers in Prince Edward Island are trained in inspection, enforcement, and investigative procedures relevant to tobacco and vaping control legislation.
