Licenses help protect Island wildlife

May 11, 2017

Two types of licensing revenue will continue to help protect wildlife across Prince Edward Island.

The Wildlife Conservation Fund financially supports groups working on projects that benefit wildlife and wildlife conservation, and in 2016 it funded 51 projects. It is supported through two revenue streams: annual license fees for hunting, angling and trapping, and the $10 special conservation license plates featuring iconic Island wildlife images.

“The Government of Prince Edward Island was pleased to sign a memorandum of understanding with the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund Committee this week to reaffirm our support of the committee and the great work they are doing across the province,” said Communities, Land and Environment Minister Robert Mitchell. “The signing finalizes the agreement in which government provides 100 per cent of the funds raised through the special license plate program to the Wildlife Conservation Fund.”

The conservation fund committee is composed of 11 volunteers that consider funding applications in the spring and fall of each year. Funded projects are divided into categories including natural areas, habitat restoration or enhancement, education, research and monitoring, and other projects.

“The WCF Committee is delighted with this formal confirmation of secure financial support for a diverse array of wildlife projects across the province,” said WCF Committee Chair Jackie Waddell. “These awards go to a broad spectrum of groups providing excellent outdoor education, habitat restoration and key research outcomes that benefit wildlife and Islanders alike.”

A full description of the projects can be found at the new Wildlife Conservation Fund website where Islanders also can learn more about the fund and how to apply for project funding.

“The conservation plates allow thousands of Islanders to contribute to the protection of wildlife and the environment on Prince Edward Island while displaying their pride in our natural heritage,” said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar. “This program has been a big success for wildlife and Islanders.”
