What do conservation officers do?

PEI's Conservation Officers enforce provincial and federal legislation related to wildlife, natural resources and public safety. They are fully trained law enforcement personnel who have additional education in environmental management. Conservation officers patrol Island highways, seashores, and wild places in an effort to preserve and protect the province’s wildlife and natural environment.

There are six full-time conservation officers, and one seasonal conservation officer. A day in the life of a conservation officer may include any or all of the following:

  • responding to public reports or complaints
  • monitoring and investigating environmental issues for compliance and due diligence
  • patrolling the Confederation Trail
  • enforcing laws during fishing/hunting/trapping seasons
  • protecting public safety, and
  • working with landowners to address high risk environmental threats.

Did you know?

75 per cent of investigations by conservation officers into environmental matters are in response to public complaints.

Illegal dumping

Illegal dumping can hurt the environment, wildlife and communities. It's also illegal and will result in fines. To report illegal dumping, call 902-368-4884. Conservation officers will follow-up on your tip. To learn more about proper disposal of waste, visit Island Waste Management.

How can I contact a conservation officer?

During regular office hours, contact a Conservation Officer in your area. Tips can also be shared online through the report a wildlife violation tool.
