Energy Rebate

The 2018 Budget Address outlined the following program:

A large part of our efforts will be to engage Islanders directly in reducing carbon emissions and working to make electricity cheaper. Significantly, we are in this plan committing to providing Islanders with a Clean Energy Price Incentive and will rebate 10% of first block of residential electricity, as well as on lower emitting heat sources, including firewood, pellets and propane. This is a direct savings of $120 per household each year and provides a clear pricing signal for cleaner energy.

Which energy purchases are eligible?

The following energy products will be eligible for provincial rebates:

  • Electricity – a rebate will apply to the first block (2,000 kWh per month) on eligible residential bills for year-round customers, effective on bills starting July 16.
  • Propane – a rebate will apply on purchases for residential home heating. This applies to propane bills starting July 1.
  • Wood Pellets – a rebate will apply on pellets used for space heating. The rebate will be applied starting July 1.
  • Firewood – a rebate will apply on purchases of one cord or more used for space heating. The rebate was effective as of May 14 and consumers will be able to apply for the rebate if their supplier is not part of the program.
  • Wood Chips – purchases for residential heating will be eligible for a rebate by submitting an application.

Where possible, the rebate will be at the retail level and the Province will reimburse the supplier for 10% of sales subject to HST.

What is the value of the rebate?

The Province will provide a rebate equivalent to 10% of eligible purchases, pretax.

How do I get the rebate?

In most cases, the rebate will be automatically deducted from your electricity, propane or wood fuel bill. In a few cases you will have to complete a Customer Rebate Application Form along with a PEI Payee Registration Form to be eligible for payment. Send, to the Department, a copy of the completed forms and original invoice(s) showing that HST was paid on the original purchase.   Applications will be accepted for rebates greater than $50 or once per year.

Are there forms for vendors and suppliers?

Yes, you must register as a supplier to be able to provide the rebate to your customers. If you are not already a registered supplier with government, you must also fill out the vendor registration form.

Suppliers can be reimbursed by submitting an Eligible Supplier Reimbursement Form
