Health Care Futures Program

The Health Care Futures Program exposes students to health care fields in Prince Edward Island. Students will be hired to work in the public health care sector, in fully licensed private long term care and community care facilities alongside health professionals. Students have the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience while contributing to our health care system and services.

Applications will be accepted until April 5, 2024.

Am I eligible to apply? 

You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and either be:      

  • a Grade 12 student graduating in summer 2024 and planning to take a post-secondary health care program in the fall, OR
  • a post secondary student currently enrolled in a health related program who is returning to school in the fall to study in the same program, OR
  • a graduating post secondary student who will be returning to school to study another health care program.

ATTENTION Nursing Students: If you have successfully completed three years of a Bachelor Degree in Nursing program, please apply to the Nursing Student Summer Employment Program and not the Health Care Futures Program.  Students of a Bachelor Degree in Nursing program who have successfully completed one or two years of a nursing program and students who have successfully completed a full year of a Licensed Practical Nursing program are encouraged to apply to Health PEI to work as casual Resident Care Worker or Patient Care Worker within Health PEI facilities using the instructions below.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications will be accepted until April 5, 2024.

What type of work experience should I expect?

Facility staff will coordinate job duties and supervise the students. Job duties may include duties that enhance the comfort of patients and residents, and duties that provide assistance with social and recreational activities.

You must indicate your preferred work site from the list of available work site options. The list of available work sites is subject to change. 

If selected, when will I start work?

There are two types of full-time (37.5 hours per week) placements - one in June and one in July. Student rates of pay are subject to change*:

  • Grade 12 graduates - $14.48/hr - based on 2023 rates, subject to change
  • Post secondary students - $ 15.93/hr - based on 2023 rates, subject to change

How long will the application form take me to complete?

The application form should only take a few minutes to complete, given you have the required information readily available before starting the application. You will be asked to provide basic contact information; education information; job and work site preferences; recent employment and relevant volunteer experience; and for employment or volunteer references and their contact information.

When will I know if I have been selected?

Applicants who have been accepted into the Health Care Futures program should expect to receive an email on the status of their application in either late May or early June, 2024.

Please note: you must provide a Criminal Record Check prior to the employment start date. Some facilities require employees to adhere to a dress code policy.
