Health PEI services for patients without a family doctor
Timely access to care is a cornerstone of the healthcare system. While not all Islanders have access to a regular family doctor or nurse practitioner, Health PEI offers many services that can be accessed directly by community members.
Updates on recently closed practices
January 23, 2023 - Former patients of doctors Cooke, Stephanie MacDonald, Peterson, Saunders, Scales, and Stewart: your names have been added to the Health PEI Maple virtual care service roster. You are now able to register with Maple (using your provincial health card) and access virtual care services.
Resources available to you
Audiology/Hearing services
Hearing services are offered to all Islanders. You can contact Audiology Services at 902-368-5807 or visit the website.
Breast Screening
Breast screening can be accessed without a referral by those who are eligible by calling 1-888-592-9888 (toll free).
Dental Program
Oral health is a part of health care. Health PEI administers the Dental Program, which provides financial support for dental care to Islanders who meet the eligibility criteria.
Diabetes Program
If you have diabetes or are concerned you may have the condition, you can contact the Diabetes Program for support. Access to the program can be made through self-referral.
Gender Affirming Care
Gender-affirming health services are offered in Prince Edward Island. Visit the website for more information.
Medical Assistance in Dying
Patients wishing to learn more about MAiD can contact the clinic by calling 902-288-1096. Clinic staff are able to support inquiries by gathering patient information, providing additional information available online and/or may liaise with a MAiD provider directly.
Mental Health and Addictions Services
Mental Health and Addictions Services offer many services directly, without the need of a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner. The Mental Health and Addictions Service phone line is available toll-free at 1-833-553-6983. Calls are answered by trained mental health professionals (a registered nurse or a social worker) 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Mobile Mental Health Response Service (1-833-553-6983 toll free)is available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, providing timely access to assessment, treatment and connection to ongoing mental health care during a time of crisis. The team of trained health care professions provides in-person care when situations require more than phone-based support.
Mental Health Walk-in Clinics offer immediate support to help with anxiety, depression and other complex and high-risk issues. No appointment is needed.

Addictions Services Walk-in/Call-in Clinics offer support for substance use and gambling addiction while enabling individuals to remain at home. Call-in clinics are offered Tuesday – Thursday.

Speech Therapy for Pre-School Children
Speech Language Pathology Services are available for children before that begin school.

Virtual Care for Patients without a Primary Care Provider
This service provides free online care from a family doctor to those you are on the Patient Registry and awaiting a regular care provider.
Unaffiliated Prenatal Clinic
Prenatal patients between the gestational age (number of weeks pregnant) of 10 weeks and 34 weeks without a primary care provider, can call 902-288-1180 to be added to our clinics (please call between 6-8 weeks gestation). Prenatal appointments will be booked at defined weeks between 10 and 32 weeks for routine prenatal care only. You will be referred to the OB/GYN clinic at 34 weeks.
Unaffiliated Well Baby Clinics
Newborns/children up to the age of 18 months are seen in this clinic to assess both physical and developmental health. To register for this clinic please call 902-288-1180. These appointments are based on Rourke Assessment Tool.
Walk-in Clinics
Walk-in clinics provide non-urgent care and are available to the public at various locations across the province.
Sexual Health, Options & Reproductive Services
Sexual Health, Options & Reproductive Services provides reproductive and sexual health care to Islanders of all genders, orientations and ages at various sites across PEI. To access safe, confidential and supportive services, call 1-844-365-8258 (toll-free).
